Part of Operation Gothic Serpent, it aimed to capture warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid's lieutenants. The mission turned disastrous when Somali militia shot down two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters, leading to intense urban combat. Eighteen U.S. soldiers and hundreds of Somalis died. The battle's graphic media coverage shocked the American public, prompting a U.S. withdrawal from Somalia and influencing future military policies. The events were later depicted in Mark Bowden's book "Black Hawk Down" and a subsequent film adaptation.
