Description: SAMUEL FREEMAN MILLER (1816-1890) was an associated justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1862 until his passing. He was appointed by Abraham Lincoln. Miller favored the abolition of slavery and supported the Whigs. He moved to Keokuk, Iowa, an area more supportive of his abolitionist views and immediately freed his few slaves who had come with his family from Kentucky. His legal opinions strongly favored Lincoln’s positions. Offering a one-page, 5 7/8 x 7 ¼, ALS, Keokuk, Iowa, May 5, 1864, to an autograph seeker. “Your letter of the 18th, I find in reaching home yesterday. “In compliance with your request, you will find the autograph official on the next page. “Respectfully, “Sam F. Miller” Light toning, but in excellent condition. The separate page is not present, but his autograph clearly appears in the letter.
