Strange Ways Paul Stanley ~ Guitar, Lead Vocals Gene Simmons ~ Bass, Vocals Ace Frehley ~ Lead Guitar, Vocals Peter Criss ~ Drums, Vocals Shortly after KISS self-titled debut hit record stores in February 1974, the band headed onto the rood for a grueling eight- month tour that began in the far reaches of Canada and continued throughout the United States. In response to this first-time North American onslaught, and in contrast to their ridicule of the album, critics were nearly unanimous In their praise: KISS ' dynamic live show was, without question, far superior to their vinyl release. Word of the band's remarkable performance quickly spread overseas and one fact become incontrovertible: KISS was a tough act to follow. Though KISS' objective was to hold in thrall every city and small town on the continent, the band also made time to participate in record store signings, kissing contests, and television appearances. Paul "Starchild" Stanley, Gene "Demon" Simmons, "Space" Ace Frehley, and Peter "Catman" Criss were hungry to promote KISS whenever and wherever possible,- they were like kids excitedly exploring a new wonderland and they wanted to savor every second of the experience. For the first time in their lives, KISS knew the real rock 'n' roll lifestyle—they were rock stars. KISS continued to make their mark touring until they encountered a major obstacle: headlining bands, fearful of being upstaged, began shutting KISS out of concerts. Before long, KISS could not get an opening gig at any major venue. Despite pleas from Casablanca Records’ President Neil Bogart to appear "less threatening” to their wary big-name competitors, KISS refused to tone down their spectacular act. Audiences had come to recognize KISS as the band with the must-see live performance. True to this image, KISS started to headline at small halls and clubs throughout the country until Bogart sent them back to the studio to work on their second album. With producers Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise again at the soundboard, KISS entered Los Angeles' Village Recorder intent on making an album that, unlike its relatively standard rock 'n' roll predecessor, would truly personify KISS' heavy live sound. While Frehley and Stanley created brand-new material such as "Strange Ways," "Mainline," and "Comin' Home," Simmons updated unused tracks like "Goin' Blind" (previously "Little Lady" in its Wicked Lester phase) and "Watchin' You." With a concentrated fury and rumble, the band recorded steel-laden tracks such as "Parasite," "Got To Choose," and "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll." When the album was finished, KISS knew they had achieved the untamed sound they had been searching for. Photographer Norman Seeff designed KISS' next album cover with startling visuals to complement the band's powerful sound. Seeff, with art director John Von Homersveld, took his cue from the band's kobuki-style makeup and incorporated hints of Japanese culture into the cover. The result: a striking hybrid foursome that jumps off the printed surface and magnifies KISS' unique look. When Hotter Than Hell was released on October 22, 1974, the band had been in the public eye for barely a year. KISS urge to deluge the world with their music had grown only fiercer and nothing would stop them from satisfying it. Just days after the album's completion, KISS returned to the road to further spread their reputation as the act that must be seen to be believed. ~ Robert V.
