Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) HARROW: THE SPEECH HOUSE.Harrow School was founded in 1571 by a local yeoman named John Lyon for "thirty poore children of the parish of Harrow;" but in the constitution was a clause allowing the master to receive beside "so many Foreigners as practicable, for "such stipend and wages as he can get," and out of this clause grew the vast public school which has eclipsed the original foundation. The original school-house is just below the church, the "Fourth Form Room" being the original school-room, and covered with carved school-boy names, many of which have become famous. The first Speech Room was erected by Dr. Butler in 1820; the present Speech House was built in 1874 at a cost of £20,000, and is a semicircular building with amphitheatre seats, the chord of the arc being next the road.
