1785 Antique Print; Burgh Castle, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk after Grose

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Burgh Castle, Suffolk (since 1974 part of Norfolk)". DATE PRINTED: 1787 from an engraving made in 1785, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area of the view, including titles, is approximately 16 x 11.5 cm, 6.25 x 4.5 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved from a drawing by Francis Grose. Published by Samuel Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London. PROVENANCE: This print was published in an 1787 edition of "The Antiquities of England and Wales", by Francis Grose. Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Burgh Castle is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated on the east bank of the River Waveney, some 6 km west of Great Yarmouth and within the Broads National Park. The parish was part of Suffolk until 1974. Burgh Castle is the site of one of several Roman forts constructed to hold cavalry as a defence against Saxon raids up the rivers of the east and south coasts of southern Britain (the Saxon Shore). Possibly this was Gariannonum, a name that appears in a single source; the identification was once thought secure, but is now thought doubtful by specialists. The fort is a very large rectangle with three of the tall massively built walls still extant; the fourth fell into what was once an estuary but is now a marsh. Breydon Water is all that is left of the estuary this fort once overlooked. The castle is owned by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, with the walls in the care of English Heritage.
